The Necessity of Strategy With Vision

By New Churches Team

If I were to say the word strategy, what do you think about? If I were to say the word vision, what do you think about? What feelings are evoked with both of those words? Both are necessary. Vision is a lofty dream or something you see or where we are going or what we are going to do. But what about strategy? What is it? I want you to think about it like this: strategy helps make vision a tangible reality. I mean, who wants to dream all day and look around and think, did we actually do anything? How do we make in reality what we’ve dreamed about and talked about and what we’ve planned.

Strategy fulfills your church’s vision. Maybe even your vision as the leader. Strategy is the framework that makes the vision thrive. It allows the vision to find life. It’s where it’s alive.

3 Reasons Why Strategy Is So Important

  1. Strategy helps the vision become actionable.

You have to do something to make the plan come alive. If your end result is impact, growth, inspiration, or whatever it is, then it requires something actionable. When you put a strategy into place, it takes a vision, puts it into strategy, makes it actionable, and gives you the result you want. If you don’t have the strategy and you skip over that step, you don’t get the action or the result that you want.

  1. Strategy helps people see how they fit into the big picture.

Imagine you have a vision – a picture of a preferred future – but it doesn’t include any of the people you influence. That’s not exciting. One key thing for your leadership is to help people buy into the vision, to help it come alive for them, to make them feel like they are a part of it. How do you do that? With a strategy. It helps people that you are leading become a part of something that is being created.
