Spiritual Conversations in a Time of Crisis

By New Churches Team

The whole world is humbled right now, and people are looking for answers. We are all grieving and dealing with loss. It is critical for us to be able to converse about the gospel while people are in a posture of humility. Lead those conversations with empathy and concern. Be conversational, not preachy, about the gospel.

Share the Gospel in a Meaningful Way

The foundational principle is looking and praying for the “person of peace.” A “person of peace” is someone who is open and receptive to hearing the gospel. How do you find that person? Ask how you can pray for someone. Anyone who is willing to be prayed for is giving you an opportunity to begin a spiritual conversation.

Right now, almost everyone is open to receiving prayer. Use those opportunities wisely. Once you’ve put yourself in a position to have a spiritual conversation with someone, ask them where they are in their spiritual journey. As the conversation leads, ask them where they want to be in 6 months on that spiritual journey. We live in a culture where people want to progress. They do not want to stay where they are. If they are interested in moving forward in their spiritual journey, continue to have conversations with them about that process.

Spiritual Fervor of Evangelism in Church Planting

There is a fear that today’s church planters don’t know how to do what we would call “personal work,” which is sharing a meaningful conversation with someone one-on-one and articulating the gospel with them. It is not enough, especially in today’s current crisis, to simply invite someone to church and expect to share the gospel with them as they sit in the pew. Instead we must build relationships, and it takes time to do that. We must also not expect that every member in our congregation is a Christian. We must take the time to have spiritual conversations with the people in our church and guide them through their spiritual journey.
