Reopening a New Church Plant Post-COVID-19

By New Churches Team

Making the Shift to Online

Kody Woodard launched his church in October 2019, and they had just 16 services before moving to an online format due to COVID-19. Before this decision, they had not previously offered online services and had just purchased their first video camera. The quick shutdown revealed to them the importance of and need for an online presence. It also shifted the approach they had been using with social media from simply informational to a place where people could connect.

Deciding to Reopen

Over the course of the physical church building being closed, they experienced a growth in their online attendance. As they began to consider reopening, they knew they didn’t want to only focus on the number of people that showed up in person. It was important that their members know that they still valued the people who did not feel comfortable attending in person. Through several surveys, they gauged how their congregation was feeling about reopening and when it would be best to do that. Their building is smaller in size so it wouldn’t really be possible to social distance once inside the building. They had to wait until government restrictions lessened and their congregation was comfortable.

Lessons Learned the First Week

The first week the church reopened for worship services, they had more people attend than they expected. They also learned several things they did well and things they would need to improve on.
