Preaching on Church Planting

By New Churches Team

Your church may want to begin a visioning process for church planting as you look to the next steps toward multiplying. As you do that, here is a plan for a church planting sermon series.

A Coherent Approach

Church planting is so present and evident in the Bible, that there aren’t any specific verses written directly about church planting. Instead, church planting is the foundation of the text itself. So, how do you preach on that?

  1. Use the passage of Acts 16:1-7. “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” In this passage, Paul has a vision and he goes to Macedonia, specifically to Philippi, and he plants a church, the first in Europe.
    • “coming over” – the coming and going of the gospel
    • “help” – when Paul brought the help of the gospel
    • “us” –reminds us that church planting was there to reach people who didn’t know Jesus
  2. Next, go through the commissions of Jesus and John 20:21, “As the Father has sent Me, so send I you.” Also include the great commission, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” As a good interpreter of the Bible, what you want to ask is what the original hearers did with the original information, and upon receiving the four commissions of Jesus the disciples planted churches.
  3. Then, move to Luke 10 where there is a proto-mission of the disciples. This is not the whole story of church planting, but it does discuss kingdom multiplication and what that looks like.
  4. Next, move to Matthew 9:35-38 that explains asking the Lord of the harvest to send laborers for the harvest. This is followed by Matthew 10 where Jesus sends the people He told to pray for workers, which shows that we are part of the answer.
  5. Finally, end with a deep dive on John 20:19-21. Explain fear is the opposite of faith. End with the mission and point toward multiplication.

This series can lay out a coherent approach to church planting from five different passages. Also, look to the history of your church for a pattern of multiplication. Share stories that have come out of your church. Look into alternate passages like Genesis 12, Jeremiah 29:7, and the missionary journeys of Paul to help you further tailor this series to your specific church body.
