Prayer in Church Planting

Prayer in Church Planting

When we begin church planting we often start with a task list. That list includes things like best practices, financing, and all the other things we need to accomplish to get the church plant off the ground. We often tend to sideline prayer so that we can accomplish our task list. So, how can we make prayer a priority?

  1. Pick a day to pray and fast each week.
  2. Choose a dedicated season to pray and fast.
  3. Annually set prayer goals, this might include things such as provision for a building, staffing needs, or insight into new campuses and plants.

Prayer as the Church Grows

Prayer should be happening all the time. In the beginning, we often start off with a core team that meets and prays together, but then this can become a task that gets moved to a prayer team. Resist that temptation. Keep prayer a focus of your core team even as the church plant grows. Your prayer team can instead become a prayer meeting where members of the congregation can gather together to pray over church needs and individual needs. Put the focus on the importance of prayer by including your entire congregation in annual weeks of prayer and fasting that include meeting together nightly.

The core team should be praying over each gathering and outreach event you host. If your gathering is an hour long, spend at least an hour in prayer over that gathering. If you are hosting a three-day outreach event, dedicate three days that you will specifically pray for that event. Ask your congregation to fill out prayer requests each week and spend Monday mornings with the core team praying over those prayer requests. Use this as a weekly excuse to pray over your church body.

Prayer for Leaders

For church planters, consider a time when you were desperate for the Lord. Pray out of that same desperation for your church plant. Starting a church plant is something the enemy hates. You are stepping into warfare, and he will not play fair.
