Innovation During COVID

By New Churches Team

As an innovation strategist, Doug Paul’s job is to help pastors create something new that can scale. When COVID hit the U.S., this became very important. At Catapult, they saw that on the front end there were people who were getting helpful content into pastor’s hands very quickly. But they had a sneaking suspicion that pastor’s email inboxes would be flooded, and they would not be able to discern content for how to lead forward. The confusion would be multiplied. So, they took a framework created by Ed Stetzer and created coaching groups to help pastors make critical decisions and give them a safe space to say they were overwhelmed. They expected to start with 50-100 people and ended up with 10,000 churches who were in coaching groups. This provided pastors with a place where they could process, plan, and troubleshoot. They didn’t necessarily need more content. They needed a place to discern that content and wisely lead forward.

Shifting Metrics

With the current COVID season, pastors can no longer rely on the same metrics they have used to determine the health of their church. But new metrics will look different for each church as they discern what faithfulness looks like for the mission that God has called them to do. Churches can still keep track of traditional spiritual growth measures like bible reading and prayer, but they can also track these new metrics such as engaging with a person in your neighborhood at least once a week or how many people you have invited over for a missional meal this month.

Shifting Culture

As new metrics are created, churches must begin to change their culture and celebrate these things. So how do you do that?
