Important Guest Services Principles

By New Churches Team

First Impressions

Guest services is one of the most important ministries in a church. The volunteers for this ministry are often the first impression a guest will encounter at a church. Every church has a different setup and different needs, but there are some elements that every guest services area should include.

Recently, Daniel chatted with Hannah Manning, Next Steps coordinator of Missio Dei Church in Asheville, N.C. They discussed elements of a successful guest services ministry and the unique setup of Missio Dei Church.

Two Churches, One Location

Every church is different when it comes to guest services, but Missio Dei Church has quite a unique situation. Another church meets in the same building at the exact same time. To manage this situation, each church has its own dedicated entrance and parking lot—one at the front of the building, one at the back. Missio Dei also has dedicated signage that they put out each Sunday to direct people to their location. Once inside the building, Missio Dei volunteers walk guests to their desired location to avoid confusion.

Getting Started

When opening a new campus, a church should look for leaders from the current campus who are willing to go to the new campus. These leaders already have the church’s vision and can step right into their roles. Once you have these volunteers and leaders in place, make sure to train them. Start with a large training before opening, and then offer continual training. Coach the volunteers on what you are doing and why you are doing it. Have clear expectations and don’t be afraid to ask people to do what you need them to do. Most people will be happy to do a job once they have clear expectations.

The Basics

There are a few basic components that every guest services ministry needs.
