How to Develop Staff and Young Leaders

The Disciples’ Training

Jesus called 12 from his larger band of disciples to be with Him so He could send them out in the Great Commission. The bulk of those years recorded in the gospels is just showing us the disciples with Jesus. If you really do an in-depth study of the gospels, you will see that more times than not, the disciples did not get it right. They didn’t understand His message. They didn’t catch the magnitude of His miracles. Even after His resurrection in Acts 1, the question they asked was “are you now going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” The disciples still didn’t get it and the Lord still took a risk on them and trusted them with ministry. But His training for them was the time they spent with Him. In fact, in the midst of pressure, it was said of them it was obvious that they had been with Jesus.

A Biblical Approach

In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul says, “the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” Second Timothy 2:2 is the key to developing a long legacy of faithful ministry in a local church. There are four generations in one verse: Paul, Timothy, faithful men, and others. But two words in that verse represent the key for a legacy of faithfulness and fruitfulness for years in a local church: faithful men. A part of our pastoral task is to commit to developing, raising up, and building of faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
