How to Attract and Engage New People

By New Churches Team

When launching a church plant, one of your first concerns may be how to attract people to come to your church. And then once they’ve visited, how do you engage them to get then to come back again and again? Here are three tips.

  1.   Meet People

The first step is to consider that you don’t need to attract people, you need to think about how you can meet people. If you don’t have the resources to send out mailers and to host a large community launch, just get out in your community. You always have the resource of simply meeting people. You can go door-to-door and introduce yourself to the people in the neighborhood. Start Bible studies and use them as an invitation into your church. Ask people what they want from a new church in the community.

  1.   Host a Big Event

After you’ve taken time to get out in the community and meet people, host an event that invites the community to your church. If you have the resources, plan an attractional event like a community cookout or a fall festival. If you don’t have many resources, consider how you can serve the community. Offer to freshen up a local school campus. Clean the kids playground and park down the road. Host a food or clothing drive to donate to families in need in the community. If you aren’t sure of what may need to be done in your community, ask.

  1.   Encourage Small Steps

Once people are visiting your church, encourage them to take small next steps. Some people are more relationally-oriented and some are more task-oriented. Offer options for both types of people. For task-oriented people, offer classes and Bible studies. For those relationally-oriented people, offer life groups for them to get to know a small group of people. Ultimately, no matter what path they choose, relationships will help them stick to the church. Once they have an initial point of connection, offer more next step options like membership classes and opportunities to serve.
