Discerning God’s Will in Your 30s and 40s

By New Churches Team

Remember when you thought you knew yourself in your 20s? Looking back, you begin to realize that you were full of passion but didn’t necessarily have the experience or wisdom that you have now.

While ministering during your 20s is usually more full of passion than experience, being in the 30s and 40s decades of life is an interesting time. You have definitely learned from your past wins and regrets, and you most likely still have the passion, energy, and drive to continue to want to serve Christ with everything you have. Retirement is in the far enough future that you may still be willing to ask, “God, what is next? Should I stay here or move on to something different? Should I consider church planting? Should I accept a senior pastor role? God, what should I do?!”

The Importance of Prayer and Fasting

One thing that never changes while asking the above questions is the need to take the time to pray and fast. It is wise to have a clear sense of what is next and what the Lord wants you to do before making any life-altering decisions. You want to be able to know for sure what you are doing.

Inevitably, something will happen during ministry where you will question, “God, what am I doing? Why did you call me here?!” On those days, and in those moments, you can go back to that time when you were sure beyond the shadow of the doubt that God called you to serve there.

You Are One

Another important factor to note is that if you are married, God will speak to you and your spouse. He will never speak to only one of you and not the other.  If the both of you are praying about the next steps and you continue to come up with different answers, it is a good opportunity to continue to pray about the situation before moving forward. God will never give opposing answers to a husband and wife and ask them to go separate ways.
