Develop a COVID-19 Strategy

By New Churches Team

In a recent article, Andy Crouch explained that we can think about COVID-19 as a blizzard, a winter, or as a little ice age. Most of us have now emerged from the blizzard, when we couldn’t see what was in front of us. Now, winter has set in. This is our new normal and we don’t know when everything will be open. In light of that, it is time for us to settle into that and create a short-term strategy for the next three months.

OODA Loop

A three-phase strategy will likely not work for churches right now, because we won’t know what our new normal is for quite a while. Instead, consider using an OODA loop – Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. We should constantly move through that loop as we move through new phases in our journey toward reopening and finding a new normal.

Engagement

The first step in creating a three-month strategy is considering engagement. During the “blizzard” we got online quickly, but now we need to move to two-way interactive content. On weekends, continue to deliver good content, but what does online engagement look like on social media and on the website? Regardless of the size of our churches and staff, we can create engaging weekend content.

Leadership Development

We also have a unique opportunity to focus on leadership development right now and create all the onboarding content needed for the future. We can use resources on Ministry Grid to help create role descriptions and to train volunteers. This will allow us to be high tech and high touch when we gather together again.
