Current Trends in Student Ministry

By New Churches Team

The biggest and most successful student ministries in the country are all trying to figure out one thing. The focus is getting kids into contextual small groups with a faithful adult leader who loves Jesus and wants to point them to Jesus. Even though this is the most well-connected group of students in history, face-to-face interaction with peers and adults is desired, whether it is realized or not. True discipleship and spiritual growth isn’t happening on social media platforms. It’s happening in basements and living rooms where five or six students and an adult leader gather.

What Makes These Students Different?

When it comes to this generation of students, they are all digital natives while we are digital immigrants. We discovered dial-up to broadband. We grew up when cell phones were for affluent people, whereas now everyone has one. These students have never known a time without Wikipedia, YouTube, or social media. They never have to be bored. They can always consume media. There is always an opportunity to be entertained or engaged in some way. They have to learn what it is like to be bored.

Teenage students also have more of a vocabulary to define and label themselves. They have definitions and words to describe mental health, gender, identity, and so forth that previous generations did not have. For example, in previous generations a student might say they were tired, but kids today would say they experience anxiety.

The Parent Connection

When it comes to student ministry, you must consider the challenges that come with both non-Christian parents and Christian parents.
