Crisis Leadership for Church Plants

By New Churches Team

As much as COVID-19 has seemingly stopped the world, there are a lot of churches that just opened, or are soon to open, that are trying to figure out what next steps to take. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Be very flexible and be informed with what kind of wisdom and counsel is being given by health and governmental officials.
  2. Reflect on what God is doing in this situation and what people need. How can you support people in their own discipleship, growth, and need to experience God’s peace in the midst of these challenging situations?
  3. Reach out to your neighbors and other members of your church. How can you live as the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus in the midst of where you are – In your neighborhood, in your essential services job, etc.?
  4. Consider how you can help your current church offerings be more supportive. Not just porting the big church experience into the home, but how can you be more interactive? Can you provide small clusters of people in video conferencing to pray for one another, discuss supporting each other, and discuss sharing about Jesus with your neighbors?

Kids Ministry Considerations

This is a phenomenal chance for pastors to equip their people to disciple their own children. Provide a short introduction with a conversation starter question. Encourage them to bring Jesus into every part of their daily routine. For example, if they are getting to spend time outdoors, have them ask their children how they see God in nature. Help them engage with their children in ways that grow their spiritual development.

Words of Encouragement

Go to God in prayer and ask for guidance on what He wants to do in this midst of this time, both in regards to how He wants you to respond but also in what your people need. Use this information to move alongside people to help them figure out where they are, what they are facing, and what the next steps are that they need to do to continue to be faithful followers of Jesus.
