In his job as vice president of mobilization at Outreach, Jason Daye works with churches to mobilize them to reach their communities and share Jesus. Frequently this discussion involves the best way for churches to reach out to their communities and how to get individual church members missionally involved, because both the church and the individual church members are responsible for evangelizing.
The number one way to create a missional minded church is to publicly and genuinely pray for your community with the church. Keep the mission in front of church members consistently. Share stories of people who are coming to the church or who became Christians because of conversations they had with church members. Keep these stories at the forefront by using sermon illustrations, baptism stories, video testimonies, and live stories on a regular basis.
One of the biggest mistakes churches make is when they are communicating that outreach is more about building the church than it is about reaching the city for Jesus. When you are talking about reaching people in the community, you have to remember that God brought this unique group of people together in this time and place to meet people who don’t know about Jesus. Make sure that your language is about reaching God, not about growing the church. When your priority is sharing Jesus with people, that will become the DNA of your church.
