Claim Christ in Every Sermon

Claim Christ in Every Sermon

One of the dangers in expository preaching is missing the forest for the trees. Many preachers fall prey to talking about Jesus plus something else. These moral lessons fail to saturate every sermon with the gospel. Instead, we need to make the Hero of the Bible the Hero of every message we preach. Don’t replace the gospel with moralism. Explicitly preach, teach, and exclaim the gospel week in and week out.

We don’t change lives. Our outlines don’t change lives. To do life changing preaching we need to keep Christ central in our preaching — not just mention the name of Jesus. Now, this doesn’t mean we don’t get practical. But when we are giving practical applications, we need to tie that lesson directly to Christ and the gospel.

So how can we make sure that we are claiming Christ in every sermon that we preach? Let’s look back to the Scriptures and see four things Paul had to say about preaching in Colossians 1:28-29.

  1. Proclaim Christ biblically.

Our job is not to come up with a “message.” Our job is to take the message that has been given to us and give it to the people. Our job is to proclaim the message directly from the Bible – to make the Word known and to make Christ known. We should teach our people that the Bible is not just a collection of stories that teach important principles. It is the grand story of the gospel. All Scripture points to Jesus.

  1. Proclaim Christ comprehensively.

Our job is to proclaim like an evangelist, warn about false teachings like a prophet, and teach like a theologian. We need to show people how the gospel should come to bear in every part of their life – parenting, marriage, job, finances, and so forth. Everyone everywhere needs Christ-centered proclamation, because we all have one great hope in Christ.
