Choosing Between Multisite and a Church Plant

By New Churches Team

Planting a Church in 1995

In 1995, Rob Ketterling planted River Valley Church in Minneapolis with no network or support. He put $100,000 on his personal credit cards and became the first customer of Portable Church Industries. They provided him with two projectors and a lighting package. He purchased a trailer and paid for advertising all on his credit cards. At the time, with no support, he was thrown in the deep end. Luckily, the church succeeded and has grown to 10,000 people with a strong leadership pipeline for both members and staff.

What About in 2019?

For those church planters looking to plant now, Rob suggests two things, “Join a network. Raise money.” He also thinks it is important to hire for the growth you want, not in response to growth. Consider how you can hire staff before you have the finances to do so.

At River Valley Church, Rob found donors to fund half of each position, and the church would pay the other half. The goal was that within two years the church would have grown enough to pay for the position without additional donor support. One lesson Rob learned in that model was that you can’t just base your success on the number of people that are attending. You must balance it with a growth in giving. If you have more people, but no additional giving, the growth isn’t supporting the new position.

Multisite vs. Church Plant

Rob believes that the decision to go multisite vs. church plant doesn’t have to be an either/or proposition; it can instead be a both/and decision. But the decision will look different for every church and the church must look at their community needs and gifting of their members and staff to determine what the right step for them is.
