Building Back Better

By New Churches Team

Before COVID, some churches streamed their services, some did it as a stand-alone campus, some did it as an afterthought, and others didn’t do it at all. During COVID, most churches streamed in some fashion to reach their members at home. Post COVID, churches are now determining what to do with their streaming services. How can we build back better in this reality where online is here to stay?

Facing Reality

We have to recognize that the reality that 40 years ago people used to come to church 2-3 times a week. Prior to COVID, they came 2-3 times a month. Now, as people begin returning post-COVID, this number could go down even more.
There will be people who continue to attend only online. There will also be people that supplement with online services. They may attend in-person 1-2 times a month and join online 1-2 times a month. During this time, people have gotten used to being at home on Sunday mornings. We should continue to produce a quality online service for those people.

Being Engaging

Remember that the people watching at home need to be engaged in the service. How can you make physical changes to keep them connected? You don’t have to preach directly to the camera, but you may want to consider being more demonstrative. Use more hand motions. Be more aware of how you are moving in the space that the camera can see. Don’t worry about making the steam over the top production wise, but, for the people at home, you need to be intentional about what you are doing.

Building Momentum

We have reached a point of COVID when it is time to begin considering how we should encourage people to come back to in-person services. Is there a Sunday event, like a church picnic, that could encourage returning? This could be the little thing that draws them to celebrate in-person. Is there a church celebration that you’ve been holding off on, like a retirement, church anniversary, or other event that could now be safely planned? Check in with your small group leaders and ministry leaders to find out who still hasn’t returned. Then take the time to extend personal invitations. There is nothing better to bring people to church than that personal invitation.
