Attracting a New Generation of Church Planters

By New Churches Team

Current State of Church Planting

The denominations that are currently church planting have been using the same systems for the last 40 to 50 years. As Millennials entered the church planting scene, missional communities became popular. Now we see a hybrid of launching large and having highly missional communities. Millennials are changing the way we start churches, and we must consider what else will need to change as Gen Z begins to plant. What are some paradigms and institutions that will capture the attention of Gen Z?

Looking to 2050

According to sociologists, by 2050 there will no longer be a majority race in the United States. Those who built the current church planting institutions will be gone by then and a whole new generation of church leaders will emerge on the scene. Our generation isn’t thinking about giving them a better situation to work from. That increases their burden to have to plant more churches. How can we better pass the baton? How can we provide a better stage for them? We need to create an environment where we are developing those leaders today. It’s important to listen to the cultural critics of the evangelical church. Not to join the cacophony, but to hear what our kids are hearing and understand how it is affecting their opinion of the church.

Focus on Mentoring

If you are a local church pastor and you are developing a residency internship program, think of your residents and interns as mentors of the next generation.
