Annual Budget Preparation

By New Churches Team

One of the things that is really important as you begin to work through the budget is to make sure you know what the expectations are in your constitution and bylaws or finance policy. Make sure you are operating the way the church has designated you to operate. What does that preparation look like?

  1. Avoid the Default setting.

Some churches just look at the plan for last year and just plan for the upcoming year. My encouragement is to not do that. There are some things that you know will repeat, like student ministry will go to camp in the summer and kids ministry will host VBS. There are some things that you know automatically you will do for the next year. That doesn’t mean that everything can just be rolled over to the next year.

  1. Take time for evaluation.

Five to six months out evaluate who you are and what you believe. This can best be done by looking at your mission statement, your strategy, your values, and the measures you have in place. Spend time in prayer while you evaluate those things. Any and everything you do strategically should fall within your frameworks.

  1. Dream for the big picture.

Three to four months out, dream. Take a big picture look. Work through your mission and your strategy. Work through your priorities churchwide. Begin conversations with your staff and key leaders. Establish three to four goals your church would have for the upcoming year. Plan to budget for those goals. Work on things you know will transfer over like VBS, trips, camps, communion, etc. Incorporate your staff and key leaders as much as you can in the planning of the big goals.
