A Commission For All

By New Churches Team

You Are Not Your Own

Leader, there is a radical truth that everyone under your leadership needs to understand. It’s this: if you’re God’s child, your life doesn’t belong to you.

Scripture says you’ve been bought with a price, and you are not your own. You’ve been bought. You’re owned by your Savior for His purpose. He didn’t just forgive you, He bought you because He has plans for you. That is the mentality, the world view, and the identity that everyone you meet needs to buy into, and so do you.

A Commission for Us All

As you are calling people into ministry, they need to buy into that identity. And they need to buy into the fact that God owns us because He has a commission for all of us, a calling for all of us. He has a better purpose for us than we would ever have for ourselves. He wants more for me, something grander, greater, more glorious, more meaningful, and more lasting than what I would ever want for myself. And that commission is really captured at the end of Matthew.

“All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age,” (Matthew 18:18-20).

It’s never that I step out of the plans I have for my own life, give a little piece of me to God for a moment of service, then step back into my life. It’s very clearly communicated in God’s Word that my life doesn’t belong to me anymore. It belongs to Him. And He has called me to care about what He cares about, to be zealous about what He is zealous about, and to participate in what He is doing. He says, “You go and you make disciples. You be part of that work of radical personal change that I want to do everywhere that people exist.”

Two Realities to Hold Close

That’s pretty terrifying to think that my life belongs to someone else. That I’m called to this radical work of change.
