A Church Plant Who Plants Churches

By New Churches Team

A Call to Multiplication

David Sorn was a youth pastor for 5 years when he felt the call to plant a church. From the beginning, he knew that he wanted to continue to help plant other churches through Renovation Church in Blaine, MN.  Since Renovation Church opened in 2009, they have planted 5 churches and have a goal to continue to plant at a pace of 1-2 churches per year.

It was important to David that church planting be part of the DNA from the very first day Renovation Church launched. They have always set aside 5% of their budget to save toward church planting. In their second year of operation, they began the process of planting their first church by partnering with one of the churches who had helped plant them.

Finding Church Planters

If you want to be a church who continuously plants churches, it’s important to always be on the lookout for your next church planter. David explains that the process of approaching a potential church planter to them agreeing to become a church planter can take anywhere from six months to several years. But David says that’s what he likes about church planter recruiting. It’s not on any kind of timetable. David hopes to still be planting churches 25 years from now, so if a potential church planter needs 3 or 4 years to be ready, it’s not a problem.

Three Ins and Outs

There are three main areas that Renovation Church assists church plants.

  1. By setting aside 5% of their budget for church planting, Renovation Church is always ready to plant another church. In the beginning, they would partner with other churches to accomplish this when a church planting opportunity became available before all the finances. Now they expect their church plants to also set aside 5% of their budget for church planting. Renovation Church holds that money for them so they aren’t tempted to use it for something else.
