5 Keys for Motivating Leaders

By New Churches Team

You don’t want to just attract volunteers. You want to attract high capacity volunteers. There are high capacity leaders sitting in the church that never get engaged. Why is that? What do you need to do to create a culture that attracts those leaders?

  1. Give them a significant challenge.
People with significant leadership gifting respond best to significant challenges. So often in churches we set the bar way too low. Make a big ask like, “We have an opportunity for those of you who want to make a difference in the next generation. We need people who are ready to make a commitment. Who’s in?” We don’t have to invent a mission; our mission was given to us by Jesus. There is nothing more important that we can do with our lives than get invested. High capacity leaders do not respond to calls like those, but they do respond to taps on the shoulder. Make a personal ask that asks them to serve in a significant way. Give them a mission that is bigger than anything, they don’t work for you, they work for the kingdom. Mission driven churches have no problem keeping and motivating millennial workers.

  2. Deepen your character.
If you really want to have a high-capacity team over decades, you have to deepen your character. Character is everything. Competency gets you in the room, but character keeps you in the room. No one wants to keep you around if you don’t have character. Ultimately, your character determines your capacity. People are looking for authenticity and vulnerability. If there’s a gap between what you say publicly and how you live privately, you should humble your talk and accelerate your walk. Work twice as hard on your character as you do on your competency
